Where does this pixel drain to?

Every land pixel stores the ID of the basin it belongs to, so the outlet that pixel drains to is one lookup away. Select a basin on the map; the panel then reports its outlet, bounding box, window on the 90 m grid and the MERIT Hydro tiles covering that basin — or open the example basin and follow the water from any pixel down to the outlet.

Basin details
Pick a basin on the map. The panel then gives that basin’s outlet, its bounding box, its window on the global 90 m grid, and the MERIT Hydro tiles covering it.

This site runs on a basic hosting plan with a fixed number of requests a day. If a map stops loading, it is most likely that a lot of people are using it at once — try again in a few minutes. We will raise the budget as the traffic grows. The archived files on Zenodo are never affected.

The basin ID gives the answer without any tracing. To see the path itself, switch to at the top of this page and click a pixel: the page follows the flow directions step by step until the water reaches the outlet.
